The other day, we were asked by Designer Jacob Escobedo to shoot the packaging he recently finished up for the The Shins “Port of Morrow” release. Let me first start off by saying that, if you don’t know who Jacob is, please just do your eyeballs a favor and head over to his site. When he’s not day-jobbing it as Adult Swim & Cartoon Network‘s leading creative, he somehow keeps finding the time to drop hit-after-hit in the design world on the side. The sheer detail, and amount of work he’s pumping out with the band right now is out of control; tour posters, inserts, screen-printed baby diapers… Okay maybe no diapers, but trust that those would be the finest diapers known to man.

It’s hard to take a bad picture when the stuff looks this gooood. Enjoy!

Modern Atlanta: Design is Material curators

John Cantrell, Weronika Cichosz, and Amanda Millner are three incredibly talented Interior Designers who are curating the Modern Atlanta Design is Material2 exhibit. The aim of the traveling exhibition is to feature different materials used in the architectural and design industries. The exhibition is Friday June 8th, come check it out if you’re in the A!

The Castellucci’s are as much a part of the Atlanta restaurant scene as biscuits and burger wars. Steeped in tradition and from a long line of restauranteurs; the family owns and operates some of the finest joints in town (and out). With the recent successes of their newest additions; Double Zero and Iberian Pig, you’re guaranteed to see their morsels around for a VERY long time to come. Two of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet, as an added bonus.

This was a portrait we took during an interior shoot of one of their oldest locations; Sugo in Duluth, GA.

Wow! That’s all we can say. When we first heard about JazZoo Atlanta, I mean we heard it was a good time, but SERIOUSLY! This was nuts! Thank you to all who make this happen year after year… The Pandas told us to thank you too.

Mary Quinn is a phenomenal person. Earlier this year – at the time of this shoot – she had just returned from a four month stay in Korea studying traditional fiber and textile techniques from some of the most renowned artists in the field. She asked if we would help her get some images of her work for her website, and we couldn’t have been more excited.

Obviously, we didn’t know what to expect at first, but we soon were led to one of the coolest studio spaces in an old abandoned factory here in Atlanta. There was water dripping through holes in the weathered roof, sunlight peering through a bramble of twisted vines, and beautiful natural light everywhere…

Film Friday’s: Light Meter

So, one of the first things I struggled with in the beginning, when we really started to use our antique cameras pretty heavily, was the fact that more times then not you’ll find that none of them really have a good, reliable light meter. They’re pretty rare on cameras manufactured before the 1950′s, and even the few that did have them, today it’s pretty much good for just a rough estimation at best. The batteries they used are really no longer considered “safe” (or widely available), the connections became corroded over time, and the sensors just really didn’t have the lifespan that the bodies are proving to have.

That being said, for the first few outings we would pack up the cameras, thaw a few fresh rolls out of the fridge, grab our trusty Sekonic L-358 Flash Master, and be on our way. This was all well and good, but lugging that meter around was kind of a turn-off and got a little awkward with a camera around your neck, lens cap in your hand, the big light meter, etc… We needed something else. There were smaller, older style stand-alone meters, but that still meant carrying around another piece of equipment. Then came the A-Ha moment…

We were turned on to a little app for the iPhone called “Pocket Light Meter” by Nuwaste Studios.

This thing is amazing, plain and simple. You already carry your phone with you, so there’s no extra equipment to carry, it’s no-frills and is surprisingly accurate. It allows you to basically expose the scene the way you like on your screen, hit the “hold” button, and it calculates exact aperture and shutter speeds for you! If you don’t want to shoot at 2.8, fine, roll it to 5.6 and it will change the shutter speed on the fly. Want to expose for the highlights instead? Great, tap on the highlight area, get it looking the way you want, and then hit hold; now you’re calculations will reflect your on-screen image. We’ve been using this thing on EVERY shoot with every film camera we own, and it is downright invaluable. Here’s your Friday goods all metered with the ”Pocket Light Meter“.

This is a little something new we want to start up; with all the digital photography we do, it’s always refreshing to relax behind an antique camera, and shoot some good, ol’ fashioned film. It gives us a chance to really slow down and get things just the way you want them before pushing that shutter. The anticipation while your negatives hang to dry is also quite nice.

We’re going to try and make this an every Friday posting where we can share some of our favorite shots from some of our favorite cameras. Enjoy!

Sidney & Dahl are two amazingly nerdy; loving; genuine; intelligent; talented people. Late last fall, we found out that they’d never gotten any engagement photos taken, and their wedding was just on the horizon. Off we went to bask in the unseasonably warm weather and grassy meadows. Enjoy!
